U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday for the five-day World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting. The summit brings together nearly 3,000 high-level participants, including 60 heads of state, to discuss global economic and political instability.
Trump's attendance occurs during a period of friction between Washington and its European allies. Tensions have risen following the President's threat to take over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, a move European Union leaders have characterized as 'blackmail.'
According to Bloomberg news, Trump intends to convene a meeting of his 'Board of Peace' regarding Gaza during the gathering. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Wednesday.
High-stakes diplomacy and tech shifts
The summit features a heavy lineup of international figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Tech leaders such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella are also present to discuss the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.
However, some expected participants are absent. The WEF announced on X that Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, will not attend. The organizers stated that the 'tragic loss of lives of civilians in Iran over the past few weeks means that it is not right for the Iranian government to be represented at Davos this year.'
Mozambique President Daniel Chapo also cancelled his trip. He stated on social media that his priority is managing massive flooding in his home country.
This year's theme, 'A Spirit of Dialogue,' aims to address themes of cooperation and innovation. The agenda includes over 200 sessions covering everything from trade tariffs to the economic impact of AI. Reuters reported that Trump is expected to meet with various business leaders following his address on Wednesday.
