On April 13, 1840, the Holy See formally recognized Chile as an independent, free, and organized nation, according to reports from biobiochile.cl.

This diplomatic milestone occurred during the papacy of Pope Gregory XVI and the presidential term of José Joaquín Prieto.

Negotiations to achieve this recognition took place in Rome, driven by the efforts of Francisco Javier Rosales, Chile's chargé d'affaires to the Holy See, as reported by biobiochile.cl.

Diplomacy and Ecclesiastical Patronage

Rosales' mission had two primary objectives: to validate Chilean autonomy and to ensure the continuity of the patronage system established in the Constitution of 1833.

This system allowed the Chilean state to exercise authority over the Church, a structure inherited from the Spanish monarchy. The Church, in turn, maintained privileges regarding ecclesiastical justice and the regulation of family life.

To resolve tensions between civil and religious powers, Andrés Bello promoted a formula for balance. Under this scheme, the government would propose candidates for ecclesiastical offices, and the Pope would then proceed with their confirmations.

The diplomatic process also facilitated structural changes within Chile's religious hierarchy. Rosales' efforts successfully led the Vatican to elevate Santiago to the status of an archdiocese.

Furthermore, the Holy See ordered the creation of the dioceses of La Serena and Ancud. However, the biobiochile.cl report clarifies that the Holy See avoided formal recognition of the patronage system in the final agreements reached.

Historian Nibaliente Mosciatti details the specifics of this historical recognition process in a video compiled by the news outlet.
