At least 30 people died Saturday during a stampede at the Citadelle Laferrière, a historic monument in northern Haiti. The tragedy occurred in the town of Milot, approximately 25 kilometers from Cap-Haïtien, during a large-scale tourism event.

The massive 19th-century fortress was hosting a significant gathering to celebrate its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Government officials stated the surge happened during a period of high activity involving a large number of young visitors.

Search for missing persons

Authorities fear the death toll will rise as rescue teams continue to search for several people reported missing. Culture Minister Emmanuel Menard confirmed that medical teams are treating the injured and that rescue operations are underway.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. "I express my sincere condolences to the afflicted families and assure them of our profound solidarity during this moment of mourning and great suffering," Fils-Aime said.

The Prime Minister added that all competent authorities are on maximum alert to provide immediate assistance and support to those affected.

The Haitian government has declared three days of official mourning starting Monday. Officials also promised to bring those responsible for the incident to justice to ensure the facts are fully clarified.

Police and judicial authorities have already begun interrogating individuals regarding the cause of the crush. Investigators have not yet determined what triggered the sudden movement of the crowd.
