The ministry cited “insulting attacks” against President Cyril Ramaphosa on social media and a failure to properly notify the government of senior Israeli official visits as primary reasons for the action.
According to the statement reported by Al Jazeera, the department asserted that Seidman’s conduct constituted a “gross abuse of diplomatic privilege” and a breach of the Vienna Convention, thereby undermining bilateral trust. South Africa urged the Israeli government to ensure future diplomatic engagement adheres to established international protocols.
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded immediately by declaring Shaun Edward Byneveldt, South Africa’s ambassador accredited to the State of Palestine, persona non grata, also giving him a 72-hour deadline to leave. Israeli officials indicated that further measures would be considered in due course, escalating the diplomatic showdown.
South African officials defended the initial action, noting that Byneveldt operates from Ramallah, which highlights what they view as Israel’s obstructionism regarding Palestinian statehood recognition.
