At least twelve mine workers were killed and seven others sustained injuries following a Russian drone attack on a transport vehicle in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region on Sunday. Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, described the incident in a Telegram post as a "cynical and targeted attack on energy sector workers."

The strike reportedly took place in the city of Ternivka, with emergency service footage showing a heavily damaged bus off the roadway. Energy provider DTEK issued a statement confirming that the victims were its personnel who were commuting after completing their work shift. This incident highlights the continued risk faced by critical infrastructure employees operating near the conflict zone.

This latest escalation follows recent reports regarding a temporary cessation of strikes on Kyiv. U.S. President Donald Trump had stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to pause targeting the capital amid extreme winter conditions, a claim the Kremlin partially confirmed for the period leading up to Sunday.

Geopolitical discussions aimed at de-escalation are scheduled, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announcing that the second round of trilateral talks with the US will occur in Abu Dhabi this Wednesday and Thursday. These diplomatic efforts aim to build upon initial discussions held last month in the UAE capital.

However, significant divergences remain between Moscow and Kyiv regarding the framework for any potential agreement. Core disagreements center on the status and future control of occupied Ukrainian territories, particularly within the industrially vital Donbas region.

Separately, regional authorities reported earlier on Sunday that strikes in Zaporizhzhia wounded at least nine people across a maternity hospital and a residential building. These concurrent civilian strikes underscore the persistent high risk environment across multiple Ukrainian regions.
