Jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi is fighting for her life after being hospitalized under guard for the last five days, according to her supporters.

A support committee for the activist announced on Tuesday, May 5, that Mohammadi’s health has deteriorated significantly due to a heart condition.

France24 reported that the committee described the Nobel laureate as being "between life and death."

A history of activism

Mohammadi, currently in her early 50s, is serving a prison sentence in Iran for her work advocating for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty.

She was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize while in detention, a recognition of her campaign against systemic oppression in the country.

Her current hospitalization has triggered intense fear among her colleagues and international observers monitoring her well-being.
