Italian Carabinieri police apprehended Roberto Mazzarella, a powerful figure in the Naples-based Camorra organized crime group, at a luxury villa in Vietri sul Mare on Tuesday. The 48-year-old fugitive had been evading authorities for over a year after failing to report for his scheduled arrest on murder charges.

Police reports confirmed that Mazzarella was staying at the property under a false identity. He was taken into custody while accompanied by his wife and two children, offering no resistance to the armed officers who raided the residence.

A tactical operation

The arrest followed a coordinated operation involving specialized units and patrol boats positioned off the coast to prevent a potential escape by sea. Bodycam footage released by the Carabinieri shows heavily armed officers securing the villa and neutralizing the threat without incident.

Inside the property, investigators recovered approximately €20,000 in cash, three luxury watches, several mobile phones, and a collection of falsified documents. These items are currently being processed as evidence by the Carabinieri’s organized crime division.

Mazzarella is considered one of Italy’s most dangerous fugitives. His clan is notorious for its extensive influence in the Naples area, particularly regarding large-scale counterfeiting operations and the forgery of banknotes.

The arrest marks a significant blow to the clan’s leadership structure. Just last month, Italian authorities detained 16 individuals linked to the same organization on separate charges related to cyber fraud.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the investigation into the Mazzarella network remains active. Prosecutors continue to track the financial assets and international connections of the syndicate as they build their case against the alleged boss.
