Israeli military forces have pushed deeper into southern Lebanon than at any point since the end of the Israeli occupation in 2000, seizing the strategically symbolic Beaufort Castle. The expansion of the ground offensive, reported by Al Jazeera and France 24, comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered new airstrikes on the Dahiyeh district, a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The escalation has triggered a mass exodus of residents from the targeted areas of the Lebanese capital, with France 24 reporting chaotic scenes as civilians scramble to flee the path of the impending strikes. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting later today to address the rapidly deteriorating situation along the border.

Escalating military objectives

The deepening incursion and the return to targeting Beirut have intensified political friction within the Israeli government. According to France 24, the most extreme right-wing factions of the Netanyahu coalition are actively pushing for an even broader military campaign against Hezbollah, signaling a potential shift toward a more aggressive, long-term conflict strategy.

Dr. Filippo Dionigi, a Senior Lecturer of International Relations at the University of Bristol, noted the significance of the latest territorial gains. "The seizure of Beaufort Castle has powerful symbolic resonance within the history of the conflict," Dionigi told France 24, highlighting the weight of the military’s current push into territory that has remained outside of Israeli control for over two decades.

As of Monday afternoon, the humanitarian consequences of the fighting were further compounded by environmental crises in the broader region. France 24 reported that separate floodwaters have devastated parts of eastern Syria as the Euphrates River rises, creating a complex theater of instability across the Levant.
