An explosion that resulted in two fatalities and injured thirteen others ripped through a residential building in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, local officials confirmed. The incident occurred in the Hormozgan province, where Bandar Abbas serves as a critical maritime hub on the Strait of Hormuz. Fire chief Mohammad Amin Lyaghat stated on state television that the initial assessment pointed toward a gas leak and build-up as the cause.

The blast reportedly destroyed two floors of the eight-story structure, damaging several vehicles and ground-level shops in the vicinity. Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the head of crisis management for Hormozgan province, confirmed the casualty figures to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. State television displayed images showing the building’s facade blown out, indicating significant structural compromise.

Geopolitical context surrounds the timing of the incident, as tensions remain elevated between Iran and the United States over nuclear negotiations and regional security. Senior Iranian official Ali Larijani reportedly suggested that progress toward a negotiation framework was occurring, despite what he termed an atmosphere created by 'artificial media warfare.'

Amid circulating online rumors, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a denial, clarifying that none of its naval facilities in the province were targeted by the explosion. One security officer was reportedly injured while responding to the scene to assist trapped citizens, according to local newspaper reports.

Separately, on the same day, a different gas explosion occurred in the city of Ahvaz near the Iraqi border, resulting in four additional fatalities. Crews mobilized in Ahvaz to clear debris and search for potential survivors trapped beneath the rubble, as reported by Press TV.

Bandar Abbas is economically significant, managing substantial global trade volume, including approximately one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil passing through the adjacent Strait of Hormuz. This location has previously been the site of major incidents, including a deadly explosion last year that caused significant casualties.

The immediate focus remains on structural safety assessments in Bandar Abbas and providing ongoing medical care for the wounded. Authorities are expected to release further details regarding the definitive cause and adherence to building safety regulations in the coming days.
