Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna has cast doubt on the appointment of businessman Andrés Ergas as Chile’s ambassador to the United States. In an interview published this Saturday by the Diario Financiero, the head of Chilean diplomacy declined to confirm the nomination, leaving open the possibility that the process could take a different turn.

When asked directly about Ergas, Pérez Mackenna was blunt, suggesting the matter is far from settled. "That is a question for after he has been named ambassador to the United States, not now. Perhaps we can talk about it later. So many things can happen," the minister stated.

Conflicts of interest and the profile of the role

Ergas’s candidacy has caused a stir in diplomatic circles due to his extensive business interests within the United States. The Foreign Minister acknowledged that he has known the businessman since their time as shareholders at Banco de Chile, where they both served on the board of directors.

Regarding the risks of appointing someone with private interests in the host country, Pérez Mackenna admitted that ethical barriers exist. "I believe there are certain incompatibilities, but I do not want to discuss the case of Andrés Ergas because, I repeat, it is nothing more than a rumor that I am not going to take responsibility for," he affirmed.

The Foreign Minister elaborated on the requirements any candidate should meet to lead the mission in Washington D.C. He maintained that, as was the case with his own previous experience, anyone assuming the ambassadorship would need to "set aside all their business activities" to avoid conflicts of interest.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the primary goal of his current administration is the normalization of diplomatic ties with Washington. He described this process as a necessary roadmap to boost foreign investment, promote international trade, and diversify exports of non-traditional products.

Pérez Mackenna’s statements were interpreted in political circles as a signal of distance from Ergas’s candidacy. The lack of explicit support from the head of diplomacy has reignited questions regarding the businessman’s suitability to represent the interests of the Chilean state in a market as strategic as the United States.
