The recent disclosure of documents from the US Justice Department probe into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has triggered political scrutiny internationally, prominently featuring names of global leaders. This substantial tranche of material, which surfaced on Friday, reportedly details interactions between Epstein and influential individuals across nations including India, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Specifically concerning India, the files show communications between Epstein and Anil Ambani, chairman of Reliance Group and an associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, occurring after Epstein’s 2008 conviction. These exchanges reportedly covered topics ranging from assessing incoming US ambassadors to India to coordinating high-level meetings for the Indian leader with US officials.

One set of messages detailed in the files indicates Ambani sought Epstein’s assistance in connecting with senior figures in the Trump administration, including Jared Kushner and Steve Bannon, in early 2017. Ambani also reportedly sought Epstein’s advice regarding scheduling a potential meeting between PM Modi and then-President Trump.

Further documents suggest a direct link between Epstein's activities and India’s foreign policy shift toward Israel in 2017, following PM Modi’s visit. Epstein reportedly noted to an unidentified contact that “The Indian Prime minister modi took advice. and danced and sang in israel for the benefit of the US president,” following the trip.

Another Indian political figure named in the documents is Hardeep Singh Puri, a retired diplomat who joined Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. Emails show Puri corresponded with Epstein regarding investment opportunities in India and arranging meetings with figures like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, according to reports.

The Indian government has publicly dismissed the references, with an External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson characterizing the allusions as “trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal.” However, opposition parties, including the Congress Party, have since called for governmental answers regarding the implications of these disclosures.

The broader implications extend to geopolitical alignments, particularly as the documents reference discussions concerning China policy shortly after Modi’s 2019 election victory. This latest release underscores the persistent scrutiny facing global elites whose associations with Epstein have now entered the public domain, potentially impacting diplomatic credibility.
