World Athletics has postponed its season-opening Diamond League meeting in Doha, citing safety concerns for athletes and spectators as the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran continues to destabilize the region. Originally slated for May 8, the event is now rescheduled for June 19, provided that the security situation improves.
“In the interests of athlete and spectator safety, a decision has been taken to postpone the meeting,” the global governing body stated on Wednesday. Organizers confirmed they are working closely with Qatari authorities and relevant stakeholders to evaluate whether the event can proceed on the new date.
Shifting to Khalifa International Stadium
The decision follows weeks of monitoring the security climate in the Middle East. Despite a two-week ceasefire deal between Iran and the United States brokered by Pakistan, Gulf states have reported ongoing missile and drone activity. Qatar’s Ministry of Defence reported intercepting a missile attack just prior to the ceasefire announcement.
Officials noted that the event will move from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium. The venue, which features advanced temperature-regulation technology, previously hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships and served as a site for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Under the revised schedule, the Doha meet will occur between the Bislett Games in Oslo on June 10 and the Meeting de Paris on June 28. This placement makes Doha the eighth leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League series, which is now set to begin in Shanghai on May 16.
The Diamond League circuit typically draws the sport's top talent, including Olympic gold medalists. Last year’s event featured standout performances from Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and Jamaican sprinter Tia Clayton. Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra, a five-time medalist at the Doha meeting, was also a highlight of the 2025 competition.
Organizers emphasized that they will continue to track regional developments to ensure a secure environment for competitors, media, and fans. The series remains scheduled to conclude with the Diamond League final in Brussels on September 5.
