Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie has transformed into a cinematic sensation in Mexico, securing the title of the highest-grossing film of 2026 only 48 hours after its premiere. The film’s rapid ascent signals a potential challenge to the country's all-time box office records.

Box office analyst Edgar Apanco reports that the film generated 228 million pesos in its first two days. During that same window, the movie drew approximately 2.6 million spectators into Mexican theaters.

These figures dwarf the performance of its predecessor, 2023's Super Mario Bros. The Movie. That film opened to 107.5 million pesos and 1.49 million tickets sold, eventually finishing its run as the most-watched and highest-grossing movie in Mexican history with over $82 million in total revenue.

Mexico leads global ticket sales

Mexico has established itself as a critical pillar for the franchise's international success. According to data provided by analyst Gitesh Pandya, the country accounted for $29.1 million of the film's global earnings during its opening window.

As of April 5, the film reached a global total of $372.5 million. Mexico currently stands as the second-largest market for the production, trailing only the United States and Canada, which combined for $190.1 million. Other major contributors include the United Kingdom with $19.7 million, Germany with $15.8 million, France with $13 million, and Spain with $10.8 million.

The massive turnout in Mexico reflects a sustained appetite for the Nintendo franchise. Early reports from theater chains indicate sold-out screenings and high foot traffic throughout the opening weekend.

Industry experts suggest that the velocity of these initial sales positions the sequel to outperform the original film's historical benchmarks. The project continues to confirm Mario's status as a dominant force in global entertainment, bridging the gap between gaming audiences and the general public.
