The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 123-121 on Monday, spoiling a historic individual performance by rookie Cooper Flagg, who set a new NBA scoring record for a teenager. Kon Knueppel sealed the victory for Charlotte with two free throws in the final seconds, concluding a tightly contested game, according to reports from the event.

Flagg, who turned nineteen in December, surpassed the previous mark of 45 points established by Cliff Robinson in 1980, scoring 49 points on 20-of-29 shooting from the field. Despite the personal milestone, the loss continues a difficult stretch for the Mavericks, who have now dropped three straight contests, all played at home.

Crucially, the game-deciding sequence involved a turnover by Flagg near midcourt with seven seconds remaining while the score was tied. Knueppel capitalized on the errant pass, drove to the basket, and drew a foul, leading to the decisive free throws.

Knueppel finished the night with a career-high 34 points, including eight three-pointers, establishing a new rookie benchmark for the Hornets franchise in that category. This victory extended Charlotte’s current winning streak to five games, their longest such run since February 2023, highlighting recent organizational momentum.

Further offensive contributions for the winning side came from Brandon Miller, who posted at least 20 points for the ninth consecutive game, and LaMelo Ball, who added 22 points. For Dallas, Klay Thompson provided 16 points off the bench, though the team struggled from beyond the arc.

The contest held additional significance as the first professional matchup between Flagg and Knueppel, former Duke University freshmen teammates. Separately, Dallas honored franchise history during halftime, retiring the jersey of Mark Aguirre, the team’s initial first-overall draft selection.

From a broader competitive standpoint, the Hornets successfully concluded a road back-to-back set, while the Mavericks suffered a sweep in their home back-to-back series. These contrasting results underscore the diverging trajectories of the two clubs during the latter half of the season.
