Olimpia goalkeeper Gastón Olveira accused Audax Italiano of employing underhanded tactics during Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana match at the Bicentenario de La Florida stadium. The Paraguayan side secured a 2-0 victory, but the post-match conversation quickly turned to the conditions inside the visiting team's facilities.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, Olveira claimed that the stadium lacked running water throughout the duration of the contest. He suggested the move was a deliberate attempt by the Chilean club to disrupt his team's performance.
“There was no water,” Olveira told reporters. “It wasn't a sudden issue; it simply wasn't there at all. These are things that happen sometimes.”
A winning start marred by accusations
While the goalie pointed to the lack of amenities as an attempt to gain a competitive edge, he remained focused on his team's clinical performance on the pitch. The win serves as a vital opening result for the Paraguayan club in the continental tournament.
“We played a great match,” Olveira said. “It is important to start by winning in these types of competitions, and I am happy because the guys did a great job.”
Audax Italiano now faces a difficult road ahead following the home defeat. The team is scheduled to travel to Brazil next Tuesday for a high-stakes clash against Vasco da Gama.
Before returning to international play, the Chilean side must shift its focus to their domestic campaign. They are set to host Universidad Católica this Saturday for the ninth round of the Primera División.
Neither Audax Italiano officials nor stadium management have issued a formal response to the allegations regarding the locker room facilities as of Thursday morning.
