Justin Bieber returned to the global stage as a Coachella headliner this weekend, opting for a minimalist, YouTube-driven performance that surprised festival attendees.

After a four-year absence from major stages, the Canadian singer swapped high-budget production for a laptop and a nostalgic trip through his own digital history.

The set began with an introspective atmosphere, featuring an empty stage and loose-fitting attire. Bieber focused initially on tracks from his recent albums,SwagandSwag II, including an acoustic segment.

Billboard reported that this acoustic portion highlighted Bieber's vocal strength, noting that the singer managed to command the silence of thousands of attendees during the quieter moments.

A digital trip down memory lane

The performance shifted dramatically when Bieber announced a plan to take the audience on a journey. He sat behind a laptop on stage and began browsing YouTube to select his next songs.

According to the BBC, the artist spent much of the concert singing along to music videos of his older hits. The move served as a tribute to the platform where he first gained worldwide fame.

As clips of hits like "Baby," "Never Say Never," and "Sorry" played on the giant screens, Bieber essentially performed a live karaoke set. Vogue described the segment as an "epic nostalgic spectacle" that utilized a novel approach to a headlining set.

Technical difficulties occasionally interrupted the digital playback. Vogue noted that while the Wi-Fi was sometimes problematic, the glitches added a sense of spontaneity to the performance.

Variety highlighted the uniqueness of the concept, stating it is difficult to recall another major artist including a live internet karaoke segment in a festival set.

Social media reactions to the "Bieberchella" set were divided. Some critics compared the minimalist approach to the previous night's performance by Sabrina Carpenter, which featured extravagant costumes and a maximalist narrative.

However, his fanbase, known as Believers, praised the inclusion of classic tracks that had not been performed in years. Billboard interpreted the show as a personal statement of peace following years of intense media scrutiny and health struggles.

The performance featured guest appearances by The Kid Laroi, Tems, and Wizkid. High-profile attendees included Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Katy Perry, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
