Barcelona manager Hansi Flick moved to quiet concerns regarding Lamine Yamal’s demeanor following Saturday’s narrow La Liga victory over Atletico Madrid. The 18-year-old forward appeared visibly upset during the closing moments of the match and did not join teammates to celebrate Robert Lewandowski’s 87th-minute winner.

Flick told reporters after the match that the player’s frustration stemmed entirely from his performance on the pitch. Yamal struggled to convert several opportunities, including a first-half effort that struck the post.

“He was a little bit angry,” Flick said. “He gave it his all but was unlucky when it came to scoring or providing the final pass.”

Yamal’s subdued reaction continued after the final whistle, when he walked past his manager toward the dressing room. Flick attempted to speak with him briefly before he departed the pitch. The coach emphasized that the player’s unhappiness was not a reflection of his overall performance, which he described as “good.”

“In the end, everything is fine,” Flick added. “Of course, he has emotion. This was the game, with emotion, but he’s in the dressing room, and everything is good. At the moment, he does not have this fortune that he scores the goals, but it can come back.”

Context of recent public tensions

The incident follows a week of public scrutiny for the Spanish international. Yamal, who is Muslim, recently posted a statement on Instagram condemning anti-Muslim chants directed at him during a friendly match against Egypt at the RCDE Stadium.

“I am a Muslim. Yesterday at the stadium the chant ‘the one who doesn’t jump is the Muslim’ was heard,” Yamal wrote. “I know I was playing for the rival team and it wasn’t something personal against me, but as a Muslim person it doesn’t stop being disrespectful and something intolerable.”

Despite the off-field scrutiny and his recent scoreless run, Yamal remains a key part of Barcelona’s attacking rotation. He has recorded 14 goals in La Liga and five in European competition so far this season.

Barcelona faces Atletico Madrid again on Tuesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Camp Nou. Flick expressed confidence that the young forward will be ready for the high-stakes fixture.

“We have three days now to prepare for the next match,” Flick said. “It’s a very important one, and he will be in a better mood than after the game.”
