The Cementerio General in Santiago has launched its first literary contest, titled "Cementerio General in 204 Words," an initiative that seeks to capture the history and cultural legacy of the grounds through short-form narrative. The call for entries is open until April 20th to the general public, including children as young as eight.

Founded in 1821, the site has established itself as one of Chile's most important heritage spaces. It houses thousands of architectural and sculptural works, in addition to serving as a site of memory for key figures in national politics and international culture.

An Open-Air Museum

The contest's name pays tribute to the cemetery's 204th anniversary. This celebration coincides with recent milestones for the grounds, such as its official recognition as an open-air museum and the implementation of the country's first public biocemetery.

Gianinna Repetti, director of the Cementerio General, emphasized the inclusive value of the activity. "This opportunity, developed in conjunction with the Municipality of Recoleta, invites families to walk our paths, discover our history, and immerse themselves in the cultural richness that rests within our institution," Repetti stated.

The Municipality of Recoleta is actively participating in the organization of the contest. The primary goal is to bring the community closer to the site so they may explore its corners from a literary and creative perspective.

A specialized jury will be responsible for evaluating the submitted works. This team is composed of Rossana Dresdner, Ernesto Moreno, and Daniela Roger, who will select the winning entries.

The results will be officially announced during an awards ceremony held as part of National Heritage Day. Participation in the contest is free, and those interested can find more information through the cemetery's official channels.
