Unemployed workers in Chile can access financial support through the Unemployment Insurance system by checking their accumulated balances and following specific application procedures via the AFC portal this April.
The system provides economic aid to individuals who lose their jobs, helping cover costs while they search for new employment. These funds are drawn directly from the savings accumulated in each worker's individual account.
According to the AFC (Administradora de Fondos de Cesantía), workers can verify their available funds through the institution's online platform. Users must log in to the AFC Virtual Branch using their RUT and either their Clave Única or a personal AFC password.
Once logged in, the system displays the total balance in the Individual Unemployment Account and provides a detailed history of all recorded movements.
Requirements for benefit claims
To qualify for the benefit, applicants must meet specific employment criteria. The system allows claims for both resignations and dismissals under the grounds established by the Labor Code or the Statute of Public Education Assistants.
Eligibility depends on the type of previous contract held. Workers with indefinite contracts or those working as domestic employees must have at least 10 monthly contributions paid.
For those on fixed-term contracts, or contracts for specific works or services, the requirement is at least five monthly contributions.
The application process can be completed entirely online through the AFC Virtual Branch. Applicants must select the "Solicitar Seguro" option, complete the required form, and upload their termination settlement (finiquito) or a document proving the end of the employment contract.
After submitting the documents, the platform provides a simulation of the potential payments the worker will receive. Users must then confirm their personal data and select their preferred payment method.
The final step requires identity verification using a valid national ID card and facial recognition technology. Those who prefer in-person assistance can also file their claims directly at an AFC branch.
