EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis stated that finalizing the trade agreement with the United States remains important for providing stability and predictability for transatlantic economies and businesses. Regarding the recent tensions over Greenland, Dombrovskis confirmed the EU's firm stance against threats to member state sovereignty, which he suggested helped alter President Trump's position. The focus has now reportedly shifted toward strengthening security cooperation in the Arctic region, according to the Commissioner.
Dombrovskis argued that returning the US-EU relationship to a constructive trajectory necessitates concluding the outstanding trade accord. Providing greater certainty for commerce is seen as vital, particularly given the scale of the economic ties linking the two blocs.
On defense procurement concerning Ukraine, Dombrovskis explained the European Commission proposed a mechanism prioritizing European manufacturers, including Ukraine itself. However, a cascading provision allows Ukraine to procure urgently needed military equipment, such as air defense systems, from non-eligible producers if necessary.
He asserted that blocking critical military deliveries to Kyiv, given the intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, would not be justifiable. This balanced approach seeks to support European industry while addressing Ukraine's immediate defense requirements, according to the Commissioner.
Dombrovskis defended the ongoing simplification agenda against criticism that it waters down environmental and social protections. He clarified that the initiative does not constitute deregulation and that the European Green Deal's 2030 and 2050 targets remain firm commitments.
The simplification drive aims to reduce administrative burdens cited by businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, as a primary obstacle to development and investment. The Commission is targeting an overall reduction of 25% in administrative overhead for all companies, and 35% for SMEs, according to Dombrovskis.
